Passing Through Mountain Passes - Ladakh, India
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
This photo captures our group walking along the first mountain pass in the Himalaya Mountains. We traveled along the passes by jeep, van, or travel bus, along slivers of roads meant for compact vehicles, and dodging cliffs and edges the entire ride. The structure on the right of the photo is called a stupa, a symbolic structure within Buddhism, a source of fascination and learning while abroad. Stupas were scattered throughout the land, along mountain passes, roads, and within every village on the Tibetan Plateau.

This is an open air museum. It's a recreation of an ancient Japanese village. Its name means village of healing. It was my favorite day of the trip.

In the Land of Giants - Norway
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
The barren, rocky landscape of Jotunheimen (English: The Home of the Giants) is a stark contrast to Norway's many lush forests; a contrast intensified when you fall asleep on the bus, surrounded by tree-covered hills, and wake up to see only grass, rocks, shrubs, and rugged mountains, rising out of the earth like waking giants. It was like waking up on an entirely different world. As a part of the excursion, we hiked to the top of one of those mountains — Bitihorn. It is from there, exhausted and sore from the rough 2000 ft. ascent, that I captured this picture. Even though I was surrounded by many of my fellow international students, the extensive Norwegian landscape and immense sky made me feel incredibly small and insignificant until I realized that, as a member of the international community, I can break down mountains — mountains that still separate many countries of the world — through friendship, peace, and an open-mind.

The Road Goes Ever On

Our classrooms were a bit different from most. Each day was spent hiking anywhere between 6-12 miles and our learning took place outside of a traditional classroom setting. It was fascinating to get to see and experience the cultural, physical and biological processes that we were learning about.

Everest?! - Okhaldhunga, Nepal

Description

The rest of the trip feels a little anticlimactic when, on your first full hiking day, you see in the distance the tallest mountain in the world. After seeing Everest, it hit me that I was really there, on the other side of the world, exploring the tallest mountain ranges on the planet. It was an incredibly humbling experience.

7 Rila Lakes Field Trip
-
Date
-
2019
-
Description
-
This is a photo of the 7 Rila Lakes. We took a field trip there as part of my Intro to Bulgarian course and spent an entire day marveling at the natural beauty of Bulgaria. I managed to reach all seven lakes during the hike, and after stopping for lunch, my Bulgarian teacher had us sing some Bulgarian folk songs she'd brought. None of us were native speakers and we probably didn't do the songs justice, but other hikers stopped to listen and it was a beautiful song in the spirit of the lakes.
