The World Is Your Oyster! - Madrid, Spain
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
This photo was taken in Madrid, Spain. It was the beginning of my and fellow WWU student Keely Hausken's backpacking adventure, after both of our study abroad programs had finished. Backpacking taught us so many lessons about spontaneity and self-sufficiency, and was an absolutely amazing experience.

Princess for the Day at Gyeongbukgung Palace

Description
-
Gyeongbukgung Palace is centered in the heart of the city where visitors can take in the beautiful architecture and scenery of the palace grounds while also being dressed in traditional Korean style hanboks. Being able to walk around such a historic site in such beautiful clothes was such an incredible experience and truly felt like we were experiencing a moment in time of life in the Joseon dynasty.

They say experience is the best teacher. That's why I let our guide put a spider, one of many Amazonian species we were learning about on a night walk, on me. They can't say I wasn't trying to learn!

Phang Nga - Thailand
-
Date

Description
-
This is Yai Jem, a Thai grandma who inspired me in many ways. Despite losing much of her and her husbands belongings in a tsunami in 2004, she was constantly making sure I was fed, OK, happy, whatever I needed she made sure I had three. I felt the love she had to share with those around her, she did this for everyone, she made sure everyone had their food before she helped herself.

Music is Everywhere

Description

Cuba is all about music, dancing, and color. This photo is of a musician playing his trumpet on an otherwise quiet street corner. My favorite part of Cuba was the liveliness of the city and this man's music made the city that much more alive.

City Bell, Argentina
-
Date
-
2019
-
Description
-
This picture was taken in City Bell, Argentina. It is the town that my mother grew up in before moving to the United States at 16. Today we still have family living there and I am pictured with my great aunt Blanca, who I surprised when I showed up at her doorstep after not seeing her for five years. She could not believe I had come all that way to study and live so near to her (I'm an hour train ride away). It was hard to keep the secret since it took months of planning but it was worth it!

Masai Tribe - Tanzania
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
This is a photo of the Masai Tribe that my group of volunteers and I had the opportunity to visit. They performed their traditional dance and song for us upon arrival, and then invited us into their household structures and informed us of their way of living. It was a very inspirational and eye-opening experience that I will never forget.

Description

Tanabata is a summer festival that dates back to the 8th century. There were taiko drummers, dancers, and street vendors. It was so cool to be able to participate in such a historic and iconic tradition. I also got to chat with some really nice locals.

This is a photo of a street performer dressed as a kappa. We came across him at an Ocean Day Festival and he came right up to us with his tongue. Kappa are a Japanese folk creature that live in the water and drown/eat kids so the kids (and us) would squeal and run away before coming back to get another fun scare.

Double Rainbow Kitchen Superteam Go! - India
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
I spent the summer of 2014 completing a health education internship at Jhamtse Gatsal Children's Community, outside of Lumla in Arunachal Pradesh, India. One of my duties was to create a list of observations and suggestions for the community regarding the improvement of kitchen sanitation. I started my observations by volunteering an extra set of hands to help make dinner for the community. I ended up loving my time with the kitchen staff so much that I was regularly hanging out in the kitchen and peeling potatoes or grinding garlic for thukpa (thick Tibetan-style vegetable noodle soup) several nights a week. This photo is of Sharda, me, Kalu, and Rajiv (left to right), part of the kitchen "superteam" posing in front of a double rainbow outside of the kitchen at Jhamtse Gatsal.
